Green Peas Masala | Matar Masala Curry
“A creamy, spiced green peas curry with onion, tomato, and cashew – a restaurant-style favorite!”
This curry is made by blending three different pastes – ginger-garlic-green chili, onion-cashew, and tomato puree – which gives the dish a rich, layered flavor. Frozen peas make this recipe quick and easy without compromising taste.

🛒 Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- Frozen green peas – 1 cup
- Onion – 1, finely chopped
- Salt – to taste
- Water – as required
- Crushed kasuri methi – 1 tbsp
- Oil – 4 to 5 tbsp
Whole Spices
- Clove – 1
- Cinnamon – 1 small stick
- Bay leaf – 1
Spice Powders
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tsp
- Cumin powder – 1 tsp
- Red chili powder – 1 tsp
- Garam masala – ½ tsp
For Grinding
Ginger-Garlic Paste
- Garlic – 4 to 5 cloves
- Ginger – 1 inch piece
- Green chilies – 3 to 4
Onion-Cashew Paste
- Onion – 2, roughly chopped
- Cashew nuts – 4 to 5
Tomato Puree
- Tomatoes – 2 to 3, blended smooth
👩🍳 Instructions
Prepare Pastes
- Grind ginger, garlic, and green chilies into a paste.
- Grind onion and cashew nuts into a smooth paste.
- Puree the tomatoes separately and set aside.
Saute Whole Spices
- Heat 4–5 tbsp oil in a kadai.
- Add clove, cinnamon, and bay leaf. Saute for a few seconds until aromatic.
Add Ginger-Garlic Paste
- Add the ground ginger-garlic-green chili paste.
- Saute until the raw smell disappears.
Cook Onions & Peas
- Add finely chopped onion and saute until light golden.
- Add frozen peas and saute for 1 minute.
Add Tomato Puree & Spices
- Stir in the tomato puree.
- Add turmeric, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt.
- Mix well. Cover and cook on medium-low for 5 minutes until peas soften.
(Stir occasionally to avoid burning.)
Add Cashew Paste
- Mix in the onion-cashew paste.
- Add water as needed to adjust consistency.
- Cover and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring in between.
- Taste and adjust salt if required.
Finish with Kasuri Methi
- Add crushed kasuri methi. Mix well.
- Switch off the flame and cover immediately to lock in flavor.

- Always saute ginger-garlic paste well to remove raw flavor.
- Adjust water for desired gravy consistency – thick for naan, slightly runny for rice.
- Crushing kasuri methi between your palms before adding enhances its aroma.
